Back in the Chair: What to Expect at the Dentist After a Long Break

Your first dentist’s appointment after months or years can seem daunting. Even if it’s a simple teeth cleaning, you could feel anxious because you no longer know what to expect.

Well, the good news is that your dentist is excited to have you back! They won’t judge or scold you if you postponed the appointment due to time or anything else. Your dentist is here to catch you up on great oral health. Here is a refresher on what you can expect when visiting your dentist again after a long break!

Before the Dental Chair

If it’s been a while since your last appointment, or if it’s your first appointment with a new dentist, you may have to fill out some paperwork. It typically includes your medical and dental history. You’ll write down any dental work you’ve received in the past and any current health conditions. When your dentist has this information, it gives them a better idea of your oral health and how to provide you with the best care.

Once that is done and you walk back to the dental examination room, you may already see or even hear some differences! Dental technology continues to evolve with the help of constant research and testing, and so do the treatments! If it’s been a while since you last stepped foot inside a dental practice, you may notice it’s not as loud as it used to be. It’s all thanks to new tools designed to be quieter, more efficient, and less scary!

During the Cleaning

Before the cleaning starts, your dental hygienist will take two types of X-rays (panoramic and bitewing). Panoramic X-rays show your entire mouth and jaw, and the other gives a close-up of your teeth. You will wear a lead vest and bite down on something for both. They will angle the machine to take some snapshots. X-rays are recommended as they allow your dentist to see what the human eye can’t.

You’ll talk with your dental hygienist about any questions or worries. Only then can the cleaning commence! If it’s been some time since your last visit, an extended cleaning might be necessary.

The hygienist will want to ensure each tooth is professionally cleaned before moving on to the next. As your hygienist starts to floss, you may experience some bleeding. You are likely to be sensitive, so while unsettling, it doesn’t mean it’s a problem. Then your dentist will take a gander at your now shiny teeth.

After the Appointment

Once everything is said and done, your dentist will want to talk about any issues they discovered, treatments they may recommend, any questions you might have, and your next visit. It just depends on what your dentist finds during the visit. Don’t forget to schedule your next appointment when you are on your way out the door!

Even if it’s been a while since your last visit, your dentist will be happy to have you back in. They won’t shame you for missing appointments and will be ready to get your oral health back on track.
