4 Guilt-Free Holiday Foods Approved by Your Dentist

Let’s be real—you’re going to eat a tad too much this holiday season. And that’s OK! But while you’re making the most of the occasion and going back for seconds (or thirds), there are actually plenty of festive foods you can enjoy that support your oral health. You don’t have to wait until January to improve your diet—you can give it a boost while celebrating right now.

Salami, Pepperoni, & Sausage

Before you object, yes, salami, pepperoni, and other types of sausage tend to contain a high amount of sodium. BUT, they are also rich in teeth-supporting minerals like phosphorus and zinc. Your body uses them to build strong bones as well as dense enamel that is more resistant to decay. Thankfully, these items are rich in flavor AND quite filling, so you can get a lot of enjoyment in relatively few bites.

Cheese!

Cheese is a dental superfood. Whether it’s cheddar, gouda, brie, or some type with a name you can’t pronounce, cheese contains plenty of calcium and vitamin D, both of which play a crucial role in keeping your teeth healthy. These not only enrich the surface enamel, but also the underlying dentin, reducing your risk for developing cavities.

Studies have also shown that when you eat cheese, it helps neutralize the acid in your mouth created by oral bacteria (which is what actually causes cavities).

Dark Chocolate

For some people, dark chocolate is a treat, and for milk chocolate lovers, it’s a punishment. You don’t need to have some bitter bar that is 90% cacao to get the benefits; 60% and higher is fine! It allows you to get your sweet fix without the food sticking to your teeth as cookies or candies might. Chocolate rinses away easily, which shortens your teeth’s exposure to sugar and risk of developing decay.

Add a few whole wheat crackers to these foods, and you have a delicious, dentist-approved charcuterie board! It’s easy to put together, always a hit with guests, and offers peace of mind that your smile will look and feel great heading into 2026.
