Interproximal Reduction: What is It and Why is It Necessary?

If you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces or clear aligners, your dentist or orthodontist may mention a procedure called interproximal reduction (IPR). While the name may sound intimidating, interproximal reduction is a common, conservative technique used to help teeth move into proper alignment.

Understanding what IPR is and why it may be recommended can help you feel more confident about your orthodontic treatment plan.

What is Interproximal Reduction?

Interproximal reduction is the process of removing a very small amount of enamel from the sides of selected teeth. The procedure is sometimes referred to as “tooth reshaping,” “enamel reduction,” or “slenderizing.”

The goal is to create a small amount of additional space between teeth, allowing them to move more effectively during orthodontic treatment.

Typically, only fractions of a millimeter of enamel are removed, and the amount is carefully calculated to ensure the teeth remain healthy and strong.

Why is Interproximal Reduction Necessary?

One of the most common reasons for IPR is dental crowding. When there is not enough room in the jaw for all the teeth to fit properly, teeth may overlap, rotate, or become misaligned.

Rather than extracting healthy teeth, orthodontists can often create the necessary space through conservative enamel reduction.

IPR may also be used to:

  • Improve tooth alignment.
  • Reduce black triangles between teeth.
  • Enhance smile aesthetics.
  • Improve bite relationships.
  • Support successful clear aligner treatment.

In many cases, it helps achieve desired results without more invasive procedures.

Is the Procedure Painful?

Because enamel does not contain nerves, most patients experience little to no discomfort during interproximal reduction.

The procedure is typically performed using specialized strips, discs, or instruments designed to remove enamel with precision.

Many patients describe the process as quick and uneventful. In most cases, anesthesia is not necessary.

Is It Safe?

When performed by a trained dental professional, interproximal reduction is considered a safe and predictable procedure.

Only a small amount of enamel is removed, and the remaining enamel continues to protect the tooth. Studies have shown that properly planned IPR does not significantly increase the risk of cavities or other dental problems when patients maintain good oral hygiene.

Your orthodontist will carefully evaluate whether IPR is appropriate for your specific case before recommending it.

Interproximal reduction may sound complex, but it is often a simple and effective way to create space during orthodontic treatment. By removing a tiny amount of enamel between selected teeth, dentists and orthodontists can improve alignment, enhance aesthetics, and help patients achieve healthier, more balanced smiles.
